Most people starting a business, think that providing a lot of care for the client and none for themselves will put them in a better place and they’ll be respected more for this. This often includes long work hours and burning of midnight oil.
You can still do a good job and have happy clients without actually killing yourself.
Here are three postulates I have set up for myself that remind me to keep the good work, while having a good life:
1. Quality is Important
I can’t stress this enough. Our time on earth is limited, and we should provide a value for us and people around us. Keeping that in mind will help you focus on quality of your work. You should never reduce the quality of your work nor you should leave job half-finished. You should do your job professionally and in tamely manner. But, don’t forget your private life which shouldn’t suffer either.
2. Time is Passing
My cousin who is really good cinematographer recently told me that he was thinking about how much spare time is he left before retirement. If he was to work 40+ hours a week, he could have decent social life on weekends and during vacation, which is around 25 days a year. So, with 40 years to work, he would have around 1000 days of vacation. Altogether, it is less than three full years of spare time until the retirement. This thought kept bugging me for a while and made me realize that other things outside work matter as well.
3. We All Share Same Amount of Time
Working is trading your time for money someone is giving you. If you think you will do more by working more, you are wrong. Both you and Bill Gates have the same amount of hours in one day. You can both get only so many things done. If you want to do more, plan better. Working long hours won’t help you a lot. If the reason for working overtime is to earn more, think about other ways to get paid like passive income.
The last point I want to make here is: if you work late because you want to provide a convenient way for others to do business with you (as from 9 to 5 everybody is busy), you will find yourself in a situation where everybody will come to you after they finished all the work that couldn’t wait. This will happen inevitably, so rethink your working hours and please yourself as you please others.
